| 授業のねらいと達成目標 /Course Objectives |
The main learning goals for this course are: 1. To develop and improve analytical and critical thinking in relation to society and culture. 2. To think critically about how technology and the Internet affect our everyday lives. 3. To develop and improve Internet literacy. 4. To develop research, presentation, and discussion skills. 5. To develop technological skills for classwork, research, and everyday life. Main target skills are: communication, discussion, presentation, critical thinking, comparing sources, digital literacy, AI literacy, English proficiency, and groupwork. |
| 授業概要 /Course description |
In this course, we examine how the Internet has come to be an everyday part of our lives, and what that means for people living in Japan and around the world. Students will engage critically with how the Internet affects both global society and their daily lives, and develop broad analytical skills with wide applications. Students will learn about and analyze recent history connected to technology, the Internet, privacy, social media, and AI. The class will also include topics related to global Internet trends and how they affect our lives. Students will develop their own Internet and technological literacy skills, to become more informed and responsible digital citizens. The final assessment will check students’ understanding of the course contents and their ability to apply what they have learned. |

Each lesson is built on the contents of the previous lesson. Therefore, it is essential that students actively participate and do all of their prep and homework on time. If a student cannot attend class, she must contact the teacher in advance. The syllabus may change in consultation with students. In this course, students are expected to: 1. Come to each class well prepared and ready to discuss with classmates. 2. Maintain academic honesty and not commit plagiarism (see pages 35, 36, and 37 of the 学生生活ガイドブック for more information). 3. Use their best English. 4. NOT use translation software (e.g., Google Translate, Deepl etc.) or generative AI (e.g., ChatGPT, Gemini etc.) to complete assignments. 5. Use a computer and the Internet to complete assignments as necessary. 6. Appreciate diversity and difference of opinion and background. 7. Respect one another and the teacher. 8. Help create a positive classroom environment by participating actively and positively each week. 9. Do their best! Please contact me by email or through Google Classroom with any questions, concerns, or confusion. You can also make appointments for one-on-one consultation as necessary, in person or online through Google Meet. Generally, I am unavailable past 8:00pm on weekdays, and unavailable over weekends and holidays. Please keep this in mind and plan accordingly. 各回の授業外学習時間(予習・復習)には4時間程度かかると想定される。 |
