| 授業のねらいと達成目標 /Course Objectives |
The aim of this course is to introduce students to academic writing skills and to the basic research skills necessary to succeed in university while improving English proficiency. This course aims to promote active, voluntary learning as well as cooperative learning in class. This class has the following learning goals for students: 1. Get to know classmates and respect them as individuals. 2. Appreciate diversity and difference of opinion and background. 3. Actively participate, discuss, and share with others. 4. Develop ability to share and discuss opinions. 5. Improve critical thinking skills. 6. Give reasoned opinions on contemporary and important issues in popular culture. 7. Develop fundamental academic writing skills. 8. Introduce academic and research skills, including the ability to communicate the results of research. |
| 授業概要 /Course description |
Effective research is predicated upon effective writing. In accord with this idea, this course aims to build the fundamental writing skills needed to succeed in academic research. In addition, students will develop the ability to critically view and analyze elements of popular culture, such as film and television shows, and effectively express their ideas about them in logical, well-written paragraphs and essays. In step by step fashion, students will build up from writing effective paragraphs to writing properly cited and referenced essays. |

Each class is built upon the content of the previous lesson. As such, it is essential that students actively participate and do all of their homework on time. If a student cannot attend class, she must inform the teacher in advance. Based on individual and class progress as well as other factors, the weekly schedule is subject to change. In this course, students are expected to: 1. Come to each class well prepared and ready to work with classmates. 2. Maintain academic honesty and not commit plagiarism (see pages 35, 36, and 37 of the 学生生活ガイドブック for more information). 3. Use their best English and not use translation software (e.g., Google Translate, DeepL, Papago, etc.) or AI bots to complete assignments, except when specifically instructed to do so. 4. Use a computer and the internet to complete assignments as necessary. 5. Appreciate diversity and difference of opinion and background. 6. Respect one another and the teacher. 7. Help create a positive classroom environment by participating actively and positively each week. 8. Always do their best! | 成績評価の方法 /Evaluation |
[評価方法] 35% Manaba Course Homework 20% Mid-term Essay 20% Final Essay 10% Final Presentation 15% Active Participation, Pair Work, Peer Reviews, and other classwork. [評価基準] Assignments must be completed on time. Assignments may be submitted late, but may receive a penalty deduction. Students must come to class prepared and actively participate every week.
